Lynn Willard of ESP Sitting In On The Live Show Tonight at 7:20 pm PT

Lynn Willard will be performing with ESP at Dizzy's here in town on Friday night, February 21. He'll be bringing in some tunes tonight around 7:20 pm PT and will talk about the gig, ESP, and where he's at in his musical quest. Here's how he describes their Dizzy-dates,

"For our shows ay Dizzy's we use what Mitch [Manker, trumpet] calls "the quiet burn"which is a group dynamic trick to make our sound work in unruly rooms,or rooms that pose a challenge! The current personel includes Dave Curtis on bass and Gary Nieves on drums with Mitch, Bob [Campbell]& I. I like to describe us as a jazz & soul collective who specialize in Miles Davis music and also original tunes with miles spirit in the writing."

Lynn is very cool, has been on the show before, and will be great to talk to. Lynn also needs to work on his web presence a bit and I ain't got no pictures of the man to post. We'll fix that tonight with the handy dandy digi-cam.

Ruby Braff, Jazz Trumpeter and Cornetist, Passes On at 75

Ruby Braff, courtesy of NYTimesNYTimes: Ruby Braff, 75, an Old-Style Jazz Trumpeter, Is Dead

"In the early and middle 1950's Mr. Braff attracted attention not just for his mellifluous tone and his highly lyrical approach to improvisation but also for his devotion to a type of jazz that, as far as many critics and most of his contemporaries were concerned, had fallen out of vogue years earlier."

Google News has a roundup of other Ruby obits.

I had meant to link to this the other day, but got too busy. Then I was reading Loren Schoenberg's The NPR Curious Listeners Guide to Jazz last night (just picked it up and will comment more on it later) and he gave props in the Acknowledgements to Ruby for help through the years with writing, jazz, etc. Maybe I'll see if Loren wants to talk a tad bit tonight about Ruby...which would mean setting up the interview with less that 5 hours until show time.

[UPDATE] Loren emailed and will be on the show tonight at 8:00 pm PT! That's Jazz!!

News Flash: I Watch The West Wing Whenever Possible

Scripting News: "GovExec.Com reviews the last two episodes of The West Wing. I caught it last night but missed last week."

I'm Having A Hard Time Believing Our President Also

Doc says and links a days (probably a lifetimes) worth of thinking and linking on the impending (or currently executing) war. I wish I had more time to read all of his links, but the one I did choose, by Michael Ventura, says a lot of what I've been thinking, although in blog-honest words I'm hesitant (probably like most Americans) to write,

"What's interesting is that much that Bush says of Saddam is equally true of Bush: He has weapons of mass destruction and has demonstrated his willingness to use them; he will not accept or accede to world opinion (all those treaties we've broken or canceled and all those allies we ignore); he will not accept inspections (the United States is the only major country that refuses to sign a world treaty on chemical and biological inspections -- the treaty requires inspections and the U.S. won't allow that); he is threatening weaker countries; he has usurped dictatorial powers; his word can't be trusted."

It just seems really strange to me that I'm not hearing much talk in the office, around the food court, or anywhere else other than the blogosphere about what we're getting ourselves into.
