Oooh! Gammatron points to a map of Mars on a website chock full of science stuff.
This double star is 70 Ophiuchi.
The brighter star is fourth magnitude, and the dimmer, sixth; west is to the left. The primary star appears orange while the smaller star is pale yellow but it looks white to the eye (because of opponent color perception.)
Below is a the spectrum of the pair (compare this to the drawing of the same spectrum):
This is the dimmest star I have shot a spectrum of so far, albeit with pretty poor resolution. I used a sixty degree prism for this one instead of the amici prism used for other stellar spectra. The amici prism has almost three times the dispersion angle, but also twice as many surfaces, so the equilateral prism yeilds a brighter image.
When Casady & Greene went out of business, the ownership of the software they distributed reverted to the authors. One of my favorite games (on any computer) is john calhoun's simple and challenging Glider.
Glider is now available, for free, for Mac OSX, Classic and some Windows systems. You can play my own 'house', A Blustery Day as well.
Thanks john!
