Despite my dire predictions it seems common sense and force have prevailed. The National Guard forcefully retired the government thugs at the last possible minute. The signatures have arrived at the Electoral Council. They have 30 days to accept or reject the signatures. Then 60 days to call for elections if they accept them. This has been a big defeat for the most radical government supporters, but a victory for the decent part of the government. They have shown an inkling of fairness. My guess is that this was a show for Gaviria. Funny, I don't think it will help.
For the opposition it's also a victory. It has shown its supporters are willing to confront violence. So violence is no longer an efective weapon. Please, realize this and let us have peace.

On April 11 the government lost any moral claim to call itself legitimate. Today is the day they loose control of its followers... While the vice president (the president seems to be hiding, as usual) is calling for the government supporters to retire, some of them are building barricades to stop the opposition march. Gaviria is supposed to arrive today. What does he think of this?

In a demonstration of how afraid are government supporters of elections, a big group is waiting for the opposition march, that is going to the Electoral Council to ask for a referendum with over 1.5 million signatures. The government supporters have said they will not allowed this to happen. Showing the lack of serious leadership these thugs have not heard petitions from the Assembly president and the Mayor of Libertador (both Chavez supporters). I think violence is unavoidable today. This seems to be the day when all hell breaks loose.
