A joke for polite company: A burglar is rifling through his victims living room when he hears a disembodied voice.. "Jesus is watching you.." - The burglar pauses, looks around but when he sees nobody he continues. Again the voice drifts across the darkened living room " ...Jesus is watching you..." The burglar turns quickly and realizes that across the room is a parrot cage. He walks over to the cage and examines the bird. After a minute the burglar says "So what's your name my pretty?" The bird cocks his head, looks at him with one eye and slowly and clearly says "Moses!" The burglar, believing himself to be in the house of a religious freak, blurts out " What kind of a dummy would name his bird Moses????" Upon which the parrot answered " The same kind of dummy that names a 150 pound Rotweiler Jesus !"

ASP News -- The Web Services Dilemma: .NET or Java 2?

For CIOs and other IT decision-makers, the issue of Web services has moved well beyond whether or not they should launch a Web services strategy. It's generally agreed that Web services --business applications built to interact with other applications, both in-house and with outside partners-- offer irresistible cost savings, streamlined business processes and enhanced revenue opportunities.

Now, the question for IT pros revolves around which platform to build on: Microsoft's proprietary .NET, which supports Windows applications, or the Java 2 platform, based on the Java programming language backed by Sun and others, and which runs on multiple operating systems and hardware.

I just want to ad that the danger here does not only pertain to general business considerations, or even superficially technical considerations - it goes much deeper than that. It goes to what I like to call OO-Junkfood. And I'm really not sure all the suits are aware of this issue.

I should write a comparison of my pet peeve in NET versus what Mono brings to the table. Interestingly, Mono uses an ADO lookalike called GNOME-DB. Its kind of exciting when you think about it. The web ui is not quite finished but it looks like they are getting there. Of course there is a good chance that the poor schlepps who followed the yellow brick road to MS sanctioned "OO-Junkfood" wouldn't be able to convert their apps straight across.

Jorgen is excited! You're welcome. When I sit in sunny LA, its a funny feeling to read about a guy bicycling in what we would consider the "dead of winter".
