OSXFAQ - Technical News and Support for Mac OS X: "But yesterday, the December issue of Macworld arrived. In addition to a fabulous illustration of Sal "Dr. AppleScript" Soghoian pulling an AppleScript out of a hat, and the Amazing AppleScript article, (penned by Sal and almost certainly the best introduction to AppleScript I've ever read), Chris Breen had the answer in his Mac 911 column."
Gotta pick up this issue for the AppleScript article.

Early Desktop Pics Ahead of Time. Decorating a computer's desktop with a photo of a pet, a kid or a trip to Florida is commonplace. But back in the early 1990s, a forward-looking designer transformed his Mac's dull gray desktop into an integrated work of cyberart. By Leander Kahney. [Wired News]
These days I have pictures from our summer vacation rotating on my desktop, changing each hour. It reminds me that there's life away from my laptop.

Found: a modern master

By ROBERT EVERETT-GREEN
-- Suicide in an Airplane:Piano Music of Leo Ornstein Marc-Andre Hamelin, pianoHyperionRating: ***1/2The history of 20th-century music is laced with tales of singular composers who didn't fit anyone's theory of what the present or future should sound like. Charles Koechlin, Kaikhosru Sorabji, Conlon Nancarrow -- they all dropped out of sight for much of their careers, only to be rediscovered late in life or after death as the fierce individualists they were.  FULL STORY [The Globe and Mail: Arts]

BBEdit 7.0. New in version: CVS support, configuring multiple websites, rectangular text selections, and more. As always, a new release of BBEdit is cause for celebration. What’s amazing—inspiring, even—is how they keep finding ways to make a nearly-perfect product even better. [ranchero.com]

After a month in jail and he'd probably have been in there longer if Powell hadn't come to Ottawa today.

I'm a bit surprised to see this combination of commercial and non-commercial interests.

A Heavy Lifter for the Move From Windows to Mac. Packing up and moving all your things from one place to another can be stressful, whether the destination is a new house or a new computer, and a cross-platform move may even seem more daunting than a cross-country relocation. A Chance to Select Just the Right Earbud. When Shure began selling a wireless radio receiver system for musicians who wanted to monitor their onstage performances, it noticed something unusual. Scott Sullivan, the company's category director for personal monitor systems, said that the noise-isolating in-ear headphones quickly started outselling the radio receivers."It became obvious that the headphones were being used for other things like MP3 players," he said. By Ian Austen. [New York Times: Technology]

The Kind of Noise That Keeps a Body on Balance 'In a series of experiments, healthy 75-year-olds stood on a platform that transmitted randomly varying vibrations to the soles of their feet. With these good vibrations, the subjects reflexively adjusted their balance until they swayed about the same amount as 25-year-olds who did not receive the random signals. Younger people who used the vibrating system also swayed less.'
It's like dither in a digital audio system! This model keeps showing up everywhere. We need randomness.
