World-class artist in the making

By ROBERT HARRIS

-- Naida ColeAt Glenn Gould Studioin Toronto on TuesdayHere's what pianist Naida Cole has to propel her toward world-class status as a performing artist. First, technique to burn. Virtuoso pianists are like NFL linebackers; you know, those guys that weigh 160 kilograms but can still run the 100 metres in 10.7 seconds. Strength and lightness, power and speed -- Naida Cole has them all in spades. Second, an assured touch at the piano. A piano can be a mechanical beast in the wrong hands. It takes finesse to make music that sings at the keyboard. And Cole has great flexibility with her instrument. Third, a musical understanding. A true artist must be able to convey both the structural and emotional meaning of the musical material at hand. Again, check.  FULL STORY [The Globe and Mail: Arts]

And not once does Robert mention her stunning good looks. A concious decision I'm sure.

I got shuttled down to New York, and I got VIP seating, and I was like, "Wow, I'm at the Oscars or something," but then I was like, "No, I'm at Macworld." I met Steve Jobs. He called me by my first name - clever, huh? It was brief.'
The 'world's first' interview with . . . guess who? I like this kid. From my old fogey point of view she can barely talk. But she sure is funny.

It's a shame that Chrétien - no great intellectual himself - has to do this damage control. But it's pretty funny to see the headlines in the papers today: "PM says bush is not a moron."
