Frank Gehry at the drawing board Ken Thomson's immense gift to the Art Gallery of Ontario and Gehry's AGO reconstruction are combining to produce a ray of light in these dark times, writes LISA ROCHON

By LISA ROCHON

-- Come, knit hands, and beat the ground, In a light fantastic round. John Milton Before the facts of terrorism and urban decline, we were accustomed to deep, easy slumbers in this country. It's difficult to admit, but darkness swirls all around us now, disturbing our Canadian psyche. So when something powerful enough happens to break through the despair, it dazzles our minds and invigorates our spirits.  FULL STORY [The Globe and Mail: Arts]

Four Stars for new Gauvin CD

Globe and Mail Arts: "[T]here's no mistaking the silk in Karina Gauvin's voice, which has become both more refined and more expressive in recent years, even when she sings a folk tune. Gauvin is outstanding here in a selection of Joseph Canteloube's Chants d'Auvergne. . . . Gauvin's interpretations are an irresistible mix of queenly artistry and village girl's charm: They're pearly, polished and alive with personality. Raffi Armenian's Canadian Chamber Ensemble glitters too, sharing the limelight -- and a prominence in the mix -- with Gauvin in the best possible way."

Phew. Fascinating. The thing I worried about with the mix was that I'd placed Karina too far ahead of the orchestra. But the reviewer here isn't the only one who thinks there's plenty of orchestra. (Hi Karen!) At least she doesn't think it's out of balance.

Classical
(G & M) - Marie Antoinette may have loved dressing up as a shepherdess, but her petticoats were pure silk By the same token, there's no mistaking the silk in Karina Gauvin's voice, which has become both more refined and more expressive in recent years, even when she sings a folk tune. Gauvin is outstanding here in a selection of Joseph Canteloube's Chants d'Auvergne, folksongs in the local dialect of the French composer's native Auvergne dressed up in the aristocratic finery of post-Impressionist harmonies and orchestrations.

A project of my friend PC. I know he's put much sweat and tears into this one. Contrats Peter.

Sony Music Studios Installs 84-Channel Neve 88R Analog Console in Studio B
NEW YORK CITY, Nov. 21, 2002 -- Sony Music Studios has installed an 84-channel Neve 88R analog console in Studio B to be used for surround mixing on Super Audio CD, music recording and feature film mixing. In addition, an archive of existing material will be remixed from its current analog form to Super Audio CD on the 88R.

Interesting that at this late stage they are staying analogue. I think it makes a lot of sense for a couple of reasons. One, many of their sources are analogue. Two, there are no DSD mixers and Sony would need that to push their concept of DSD as being the way to go.

Apple's New Net-Based Apps

Apple's latest Operating System, Mac OS X 10.2 (a.k.a. Jaguar), offers a pretty compelling example of what Internet-assisted applications are likely to look like in the next generation. Some of the applications in Jaguar [~] iCal, iSync, and Sherlock [~] use the Internet to produce highly useable and useful applications in very clever ways. Apple has also developed a low-level set of APIs that allow developers to tap into Web services from whichever development environment they use in Mac OS X, whether it be AppleScript, Cocoa, Carbon, or Java.[webmonkey] [Paolo Valdemarin: Paolo's Weblog]
