More talk about Microsoft buying up Vivendi Universal's gaming business including Blizzard, which recently announced an expansion pack for Warcraft 3.

If this goes through, forget about playing Starcraft: Ghost on anything but an Xbox.

Daniel Pipes Talk

Following his talk at York University, Daniel Pipes also spoke later that night at a Beth Tikvah Synagogue in Toronto. There were about a dozen police and security guards and they frisked the people and user metal detector wands at the door. The speech he gave focused on three areas.

Firstly he spoke about the War on Terror, which he said was misnamed; it should be called the War on Militant Islam. He stated that the West would have to defeat Militant Islam militarily while moderate Muslims would have to offer an alternative to it.

Secondly he spoke on the Arab-Israeli conflict which he said is continuing because Arabs don't really accept Israel. Therefore any peace treaties have to wait until they do. He criticized those that thought Arabs had genuinely accepted Israel.

Lastly he mentioned his concerns bout censorship and intimidation on university campuses and what his Campus Watch organization is trying to do. In this area he was the weakest, it hard to use the term "supervise" people without being accused of censorship yourself.

Opera Software stated that competition from a new browser given away with the operating system for free is going to cause it to pull its product as it will not be able to make a profit.

The bully: Apple Computer and its new Safari browser.

Investors in Ballard Power are happy as the stock rose ahead of US President George Bush’s State of the Union Speech.

In the speech he stated:

In this century, the greatest environmental progress will come about not through endless lawsuits or command-and-control regulations, but through technology and innovation. Tonight I'm proposing $1.2 billion in research funding so that America can lead the world in developing clean, hydrogen-powered automobiles. A simple chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen generates energy, which can be used to power a car, producing only water, not exhaust fumes.

With a new national commitment, our scientists and engineers will overcome obstacles to taking these cars from laboratory to showroom, so that the first car driven by a child born today could be powered by hydrogen, and pollution-free. Join me in this important innovation to make our air significantly cleaner, and our country much less dependent on foreign sources of energy.

I'm not sure why the stock rose, competition against government subsized research is going to be difficult. Maybe people expect the money to be given to auto companies so they can use to in conjunction with Ballard Power.

A collection of York University professors and students claimed that freedom of speech does not apply to anyone when they unsuccessfully tried to have Daniel Pipes barred from it’s campus.

I will have a report on his talk later in the day at Beth Tikvah Synagogue in Toronto posted tomorrow.

Fisk: (noun) A moron

It’s interesting the Robert Fisk can attack the United States for not doing anything when Saddam Hussein gassed the Kurds of Iraq but now when it the US plans to stop him from ever getting more of the same or even more deadly weapons he opposes it’s actions. Overall, he cannot even be consistent in the same commentary.
