"What kind of peace do I mean? What kind of peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better life for their children - not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women - not merely peace in our time but peace for all time." -- JFK

And then there's Cuba....

We know that if we really wanted to get rid of Castro, the thing to do would be to eliminate all trade barriers, and actively promote that US citizens go to Cuba.

Castro would "fall" like the communists in Russia and eastern Europe, only faster.

Any sane change in American policy is Castro's worst nightmare.

And yet right-wing Cubans in southern Florida strongly promote sanctions. What's up with that? Are they blithering idiots? Are they so angry they can't see straight?

Or is there a core leadership in Miami with a lot to lose?

Are these guys hoping to be the next Chalabi -- crony-capitalist mega-thieves installed as dictator by the Bush family to repress the locals and keep the government pro-Bush business partners? Are they scared that their power-base in fun-filled Miami would evaporate without a steady stream of hate-mongering propaganda? Are they afraid of being cut out of the plunder if Cuba opens up without them? I wonder if any of them have lucrative smuggling rackets that would disintegrate -- and put them at risk of prosecution.

Truly makes your head spin, all the news that comes out in one day.

Sharon rejects any possibility of dismantling the settlements. If the US were really concerned with mass murderers and terrorist regimes, why not start with Sharon?

To repeat the obvious -- there was a clean peace deal on the table. Sharon could have ended decades of war and murder by saying one word.

Given that he chose racist war, violence, and oppression, no one need have any more delusions about where the process stands. Sharon needs Hamas like Bush needs Al Qaeda. If their state terrorism ever stopped provoking non-state terrorists, Bush and Sharon would live out their lives in a cold cell in Den Haag, with their partner-in-crimes-against-humanity Milosevich.

Who wants to bet that General Ashcroft -- heck, Tom Ridge -- will track down the missing Texas Democrats? Amber Alert for Democrats on-the-run!!! Condition Orange! Democrats refusing to bow to another mad power grab by vile extremist Republican kranks!!! There really are black helicopters, you know -- they just aren't from the UN.

Will the Democrats try to flee to Canada?

[1:01:19 PM]
Molly on Vile Republicans [workingforchange.com]. Excuse the redundancy.

Whoever thought that people who couldn't afford health care should get it?

Jesus?

Krugman "sails close to the wind".... There's only so much he's allowed to say. He gets a few remarkable statements by. He mentioned Bush's desertion from the military, but it'll be a long time before we see Krugman mention the cash trail from Prescott Bush's Auschwitz slave-labor profits to ol' W.

Today's Krugman article is about big media's incentives to avoid stories that might anger Bush. He doesn't mention that the Bush junta is orders of magnitude more corrupt in this regard -- even than previous thieving Republican administrations.

Nor does he mention that certain media companies have their own internal incentives to distort news. Consider GE, NBC, Jack Welch, and Coup 2K. Did GE have a stake in Bush winning? Damn straight. The story is Welch ordered NBC to call Florida for Bush. The Republicans and their conspirators always managed to keep a few votes ahead, so they could claim to have won, and so when the Supreme Court finally aborted the election, the Republicans were still ahead by a few invalid, stuffed absentee ballots from military personnel overseas -- mailed after the deadline, but carefully not postmarked, yada, yada. It's almost as if Welch were part of the conspiracy. Almost? Who pulled the plug on exit polls in 2002, anyway?

Of course Krugman works for the New York Times. The New York Times' greatest moment of infamy was the whitewash of the coup d'etat. Their report was set to come out days after September 11, 2001. They delayed the report. In the end, they obfuscated the facts so thoroughly you couldn't reasonably understand the truth from their article. The truth being that what should have happened is that all the votes should have been counted. If the votes had been counted, Gore would have been elected handily. No amount of criminal Republican ballot stuffing could have made up for a hand recount of all the Gore votes that the Jeb Bush's Florida election machinary managed to invalidate.

(Lucky for Bush he hit the trifecta on 9/11 and he was able to bury the coup reports under the rubble of the WTC, then wrap it all in the flag, then proclaim himself a hero because Bin Laden murdered thousands of Americans -- who had entrusted Bush with the duty to protect them... Bush's biggest failure yet, in a career just riddled with abject failure.)

So don't ever expect the truth about Bush and media from NYTimes. Poor Krugman is probably walking around with a button that says "*Don't* ask me about Coup 2K!"
