"What kind of peace do I mean? What kind of peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better life for their children - not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women - not merely peace in our time but peace for all time." -- JFK

More doom and gloom in Iraq....

How would you feel if China had just conquered the US, and they started searching house by house for weapons? Remember, the soldiers can't be polite, because they have to be ready to kill you at a moment's notice.

In Iraq, we started searching for weapons, and the Iraqis started a riot. *During* the war, it didn't matter how many civilians were slaughtered in the crossfire. That's not true anymore. There is some number of dead Iraqi civilians that is too many -- after which the US would have to leave. So we can't just shoot every rioter.

Meanwhile in another town, US soldiers gunned down three teenagers at a wedding party. People shouldn't shoot rifles into the air at wedding parties, damn it.

But the 3rd Infantry Division had better be brought home quick. They developed easy trigger fingers during the conquest. That's not appropriate any more. And they're tired. They deserve to come home to their families.

Not that some other division deserves to take their place -- getting killed, one or two per day is bad for morale.
