Wow! Drupal's All New and Much, Much Cooler.  Nice Job Guys.

The Drupal.org site, the main site for Drupal development and just about the product as a whole, has been redesigned with a whole new theme. [ Go ]  There is a new theme, Blue Martian, throughout the site and several new forums have been created.  Definitely worth checking out.

Table Design: Thanks Apokalyptik

When I was doing my Sofware Engineering for Large Scale PHP Applicationspresentation for PHPCon, I sent out an email for help to roughly 10 strong, talented, practical engineers I know and respecting saying "Help !!!".  They all came back with good tips (thanks again) and one of those tips helped me a lot this weekend.  I was doing some fairly serious sql table design over the weekend for a MySQL database on early Saturday morning.  One of those points was this:

Represent data as best for the computer, not for yourself  (from Apokalyptik)

I had cobbled together a fairly complex structure but then I wrote down a bunch of queries I need to run against it and then ordered those queries by frequency and that helped me restructure it a lot.  Thanks Man!

Ah.... A Holiday Monday

I was surprised as all heck on Saturday when someone said "Monday is a Holiday" and banks / schools are closed.  My reaction was "What?  Oh .... Veterans Day".  Now don't get me wrong -- I'm a supporter of this but the bulk of my career and even my personal life has meant that practically speaking, this holiday didn't exist for me.  As anyone who has ever had their own business knows, while your staff may get Veteran's Day off, you probably didn't.  And when you grow up working in a family business, you don't get non-christmas / non-thanksgiving holidays off.  I spent 1, brief, 3 1/2 year period working for someone else where I actually got this off and even then our shipping deadlines ruined it 2 out of 3 times.  Sigh.  And where am I now?  At the keyboard grinding code.  Still if you do get it off, Happy Veteran's Day and my best to all our people in the armed services.  Have a nice day.
