Advanced MySQL is Coming

Jeremy now has the table of contents for his not yet released Advanced MySQL book online and it looks absolutely killer. I'll definitely but this one and I'll learn tons from it.  He's also got some questions at the end of the chapter that he could use help with and you might want to take a look if you're a MySQL person.  [_Go_]

The Death of Red Herring

Wow.  I'm in shock.  I was a reader back in '93 long before the dot com era boom and this feels like a part of the industry has just disappeared.  No Red Herring now and Upside passed away some time ago.  Yikes.

Red Herring, the magazine considered a must-read among the technology elite, has closed its doors, the latest victim of tough economic times.

RHC Media Inc. reached the decision after unsuccessfully trying to sell Red Herring, Chris Dobbrow, RHC Media's chief executive officer, said Friday.

Red Herring's March issue, delivered to subscribers two weeks ago, turned out to be the magazine's final issue. It had a circulation of about 275,000. [_Go_]

A Sign of the Times ?

Here's an interesting last line in a job posting:

Fallshaws has previously been a Windows/Visual Basic organisation (due only to available skills). We need someone to help us move to a better operating system (Linux) and to better programming languages (Perl, Python, Lisp?, etc.).  [_Go_]

To quote Bob Dylan, "the times they are a-changin'". [_Go_]

Note: I know that sticking in a random song lyric from time to time doesn't dispel the fact that I'm an unrepentant geek and have been for years.  Still it might fool someone for a second.  Oops!  I just admitted it.  Drat!
