Roogle Update

Well after a nice little 3 hour odd drive to Maine (dinner with my Mom), getting lost / discovering that I-95 in Maine has two Exit #2s, I've gotten back to Roogle.  Changes:

  • Rebuilt the index
  • Responded to everyone's email.  Thanks for all the nice words.
  • Discovered much to my surprise, people are already using it -- over 500 queries logged already
  • While driving, came up with 20 odd new features I want to add and figured out how to fix a few bugs
  • Changed the indexing mode from text to HTML to plain again (experimentation not bi-polar, really!!!)
  • Added a bunch more blogs.  If you emailed me before 10:30 ish, you're in.  Tomorrow I'll make it self service so you can just add yourself

More changes tomorrow.  Some minor, perhaps some not.  Must sleep now....

Oh and if you haven't yet read Shane's "The Quality Depression", run don't walk.  Cogent, well thought out and dead on accurate.  [_Go_]

Re-Indexed

Ok.  I added a bunch more blogs (149 in total now -- so what's that like 500,000 more to go?) and re-indexed. If you emailed me your blog before 3 pm est then it went in.  Out for the night.  More hacking on this tomorrow.

Roogle -- Now It Indexes Scripting's RSS Feed !

Ah Ha !  Fixed it -- it was my own misunderstanding of the new GUID element which now works.  Sample link to prove it.

What 10 odd Hours of Hacking Can Produce: An RSS Search Engine

Yesterday Dave posted this:

Dave Aiello wants a pure RSS search engine. [_Go_]

Yesterday it snowed, I had a nasty Microsoft Windows crash and I vented my frustration by saying "I Can Do This".  And so, without further ado, I give you:

R O O G L E

(yeah that's RSS google)

And the UI is a total Google ripoff.  Thank you to Google for the time being before I get around to changing it.

Want to see what feeds are indexed?  Check out this out.

And now for the thank yous:

  • Dave for challenging me
  • Dave for asking for it
  • Jeremy for a blog roll with RSS feeds linked directly
  • Scoble for another list of RSS feeds albeit not as easily
  • Brent for testing it a wee bit
  • J.P. Licks for supplying the ice cream to keep me grinding
  • Yet more snow for keeping me in last night and not letting me go out (not that I ever go out but ...)

Issues

  • Right now its an or'd search which I hope to fix
  • You need to email me to have your blog added (I have it almost self service but I'm burnt right now)
  • Indexing is current as of 12:49 pm est today.  I'll index again tomorrow and then set it up regularly
  • Database is small right now -- 100 odd blogs, 1400 odd posts.  That'll grow.
  • If I left you out and you're a friend, I apologize -- I let out most of my own blogs too actually
  • Embarrassingly enough I don't think Scripting.com is indexing.  I'll have to review the rss parser and figure that out.  Sorry for that.  I feel really bad about this.
  • Tools?  More on that later.
