Night, Night but Searches Can Be And'ed, 3 Character Searches are Better, the New Hardware Is Up and More

Its been a **long** weekend.  But the new hardware is fully integrated into the overall system.  Here are some highlights:

  • Performance should be better (this is more observational than benchmarked)
  • Three character searches are better so you can now search for KDE or Lua and get better results
  • Date sorted searches should be much faster (roughly 50% faster)
  • I'm pretty sure that the relevancy ranking is better although I haven't examined enough test cases yet
  • I haven't switched the default query parser from an OR operator to an AND operator (that's a bad idea late at night on a sunday night when you're sleepy and not thinking at 100%) but you can now indicate AND'd queries by putting a + sign before each word in the query such as +scott +johnson or +matt +croydon or +sjoerd +visscher(1)
  • ***Lots*** of minor bugs cleaned up all over the place
  • Summaries displayed in the search results list should be much better (we regenerated all 275,000+ summaries this weekend and even remembered to put the new summarizing routines into the main indexing jobs).
  • Support for phrase searching is in place and will be turned on later this week with the query parser.
  • The index is up to more than 275,000 weblog posts from over 15,000 blogs.

Any bugs or obvious foolishness on my part, just let me know and we'll do our best to get it fixed.

(1) note that I think one of the low level changes may have broken a favorite feature of Sjoerd's.  If so, I'll get it fixed later this week although the query syntax may change.  And if this note means nothing to you then just ignore it.
