Feedster Non-Update

I've been oddly quiet (well for me) about "What's going on with Feedster changes" for the past two weeks or so and there's actually been a good reason for it -- internationalization.  I basically hate "go dark"* development with the passion reserved for smelly, wet weasels on a hot summer day but sometimes there's no choice.  And when you're dealing with architectural issues at a very low level, that's pretty much true.

We've been working very, very hard to get the overall database switched over to an internationalized architecture and that has meant that I've been sitting on features.  Lots and lots of features.  Folks like Richard and Kevin have been in on the debugging loop helping me kick the snot out of the bugs but pretty much all the new code is at the development site, not the production one.  An exception is the Feedster RSS output which has been extensively revised.  We quietly moved that into production for the benefit of all the aggregator developers out there.

So a few closing points:

  1. Good stuff is coming.  At least two major new features that make very logical sense when you think about it.
  2. Tons of fixes and features including much better querying for urls, new RSS output options, direct support for AmpetaDesk, OPML generation for subscribing to Feeds not just search results, better use of the Feedster cache so items w/o Permalinks can be accessed via the cache in an RSS feed and more.
  3. Internationalization of the database content is coming and then will follow a translation of the Feedster look and feel.  Yes I'll be asking for help and doing my honest best to make it easy for translators.  That'll take a bit more thought and I don't want to waste my or your effort.
  4. Everyone who's pushed me hard on bugs gets a huge, huge thank you.  I can't remember all of you but the IMs just keep coming and they're wonderful.  Thanks

*Go Dark is a software development term that refers to a developer going into a room, "turning off the lights" and then delivering everything in one swell foop -- without much if any Feedback.
