Music Business - Perspectives from People in the 'Biz

Adam writes "I finally had some time to really read the Janis Ian essay. Fucking brilliant. Isn't it amazing, how much money is being spent, legislation written and passed, technology forced to fruition in failed attempt after another to destroy the internet's capability to be exactly what the music industry needs: The Biggest Friggin' Free Radio Station ever...

Okay, I'm going to read it again.  I just hate getting frustrated.  The music business is like Mr. MaGoo.

Web Site for Hackers Will Not Appeal

The 2600.com site, which published DeCSS (a program to decode DVD's so they could be played on Linux machines) said that it would not petition the Supreme Court to overturn a ruling that banned publication via [New York Times: Technology]

Here's a link to 2600's discussion of why they chose not to seek review by the High Court.   The press uses headlines like the one I used above (I used it for ironic purposes) to suggest that 2600 is some sort of fringe underworld nest of evil doers.   Well, maybe that's overstating it, but they certainly don't imply good things when they call someone a "hacker."

I like 2600, just as much as I like the EFF.  They take on causes that the mainstream press will never recognize as important.  And yet, it's funny.  If 2600 is a fringe/hacker organization that is simply trying to subvert the rules that God-fearing citizens gleefully abide by, then how did they get the Dean of Stanford Law School to argue their case in court?

For more information about this lawsuit, including transcripts of briefs (e.g. one discussing why source code is speech), see this link.
