Read Rick Klau's post about Mark Chandler's vision of what his outside counsel should be doing.  And note that last statistic that Rick quotes: by the end of this year Chandler expects that 80% of the money it pays to outside lawyers will be for work not billed by the hour.  That means some sort of altenative billing scheme, either flat-rate or contingency or whatever.  Currently, for Cisco, that number is at 65%.

I also like his final quote: "Technology is absolutely the only way firms will stay efficient and effective. Those who don't use it well won't survive."

Okay, so who's up for becoming more efficient in the practice of law?

Findlaw has this report on the Internet filtering case before the Supreme Court.  Here's what I think:

  1. filtering is one of those ideas that sounds great until you experience how flawed it is.  My 11 year old daughter likes to use the computer and I was worried so I installed Norton Internet Security.  It was a pain to configure and, even then, you had to constantly tweak it.  It was supremely frustrating, even for me (a somewhat savvy computer user).  I finally pulled the plug on it when I couldn't get it to let her go to the Disney site.
  2. libraries are for adults and children.  Our government shouldn't be forcing libraries to treat all of their patrons like they are children.
  3. This legislation was not narrowly tailored in a way that should pass constitutional muster, and the only reason it got passed in the first place was that it had a noble sounding title.

Here is an article from LLRX that has some useful information.  The statute ("The Children's Internet Protection Act") is available here with the provisions that have been struck down stricken through like this.

Hopefully, after the Supreme Court gets done with it, the whole thing will be stricken through.

"Ray Matthews already puts his money where his mouth is by using RSS at the Utah State Library and teaching others in state government how to do it. Now he's kicking it up a notch, though, by starting a new weblog dedicated to RSS in Government ("News about how RSS is being used in federal, state, and local government")....He's already posted a great essay that describes Four Models for Aggregating and Publishing RSS Headlines. [via The Shifted Librarian]

RSS stands for "Rich Site Summary" and is the basis for aggregating news.  If you don't know what that means click here and follow the links there.

RSS is a big deal, and when governments start to deploy it (as they should) it is an even bigger deal.

Marty Schwimmer, who runs The Trademark Blog, asks Do You Own The Domain Names You Think You Own?  It's a good question.

But Marty's not only good at asking questions, he's also good at providing answers since he's a trademark specialist.  If you have trademark questions he's got answers.  And, as you can see, if you don't have questions he'll supply them free of charge.
