AOL Goes Gecko
It was certainly surprising last week to hear that AOL has decided to evaluate Netscape's open source browser engine, Gecko, especially since the company has been so chummy with Microsoft over the years. Filial affinities aside (yes, I'm talking about the fact that AOL owns Netscape), it's easy to see why AOL would at least test an alternate browser. The move would of course reduce AOL's dependance upon a formidable competitor. But it may also help the open source community forge a better browser. And, according to our own Don MacVittie, it might just lower the TCO for many organizations that must support the security-hole-ridden Internet Explorer. Here's a quote from today's BuzzCut on the subject.
Have you calculated IE's total cost of ownership lately? If you're applying all the security patches Microsoft puts out, the investment is huge. If you're not applying them, are you sleeping at night?
