Well, the Ski Boy headed out tonight for another week of skiing and familial bonding in Colorado. So Clemmie and I are holding down the fort this week. Clemmie plans on drowning her sorrows in pig ears and greenies. I may visit our wine cellar!

Wine of the Night: 2000 Cosentino "CigarZin"
Peter and I brought this puppy to bookclub tonight. It was a real hit. A good Zin that is not overly sweet. There's been a bit of trend lately towards big, overly sweet high alcohol (15%) Zinfandels. However, this Zin had very nice blackberry and cherry flavors without being cloying.
The "Cigar" name implies big unruly spice. For example, in some years, the Bonny Doon Cigar Volant rhone can taste exactly like a cigar. But this wine was not unruly at all. Instead it had a nice spicy background with a hint of oak (but NOT over oaked). I don't think Mike Cosentino can make an ill behaved wine.

Air Force Academy Rapes
I've closely followed this story for the past month - it keeps getting worse. There are two facets of this story that make me very angry:
- First - the obvious. It's rape. My God, what kind of culture is in place at the Air Force Academy that fosters and condones rape? If I were a parent, there is no way in Hell I would allow my daughter to attend USAFA. What's surprising is that the Air Force Academy is supposedly the most enlightened of the major service academies. But instead it is a place of barbarism.
You know, I naively thought that we were all on the same side - we were all on the same team. But what kind of team is the USAFA? I think the Commandant of Cadets should be Court Martialed for fostering a "team environment" of rape.
-
I have always, again naively, thought that U.S. Forces held themseles to a higher standard of conduct. Other countries' military forces rape and plunder but not us. Well, if we rape our own (how unbelievably disgusting) I can only assume that U.S. Forces liberally partake of the Spoils of War. We are no better than the despots that we take upon ourselves to depose.
