Two weeks ago, the Ski Boy arrived at Title Wave Booksellers at 6:15 AM in order to be first in line for tickets to a David Sedaris reading. Peter felt like a total doofus because no one else showed up until 7:30 AM. However, tonight it all paid off in spades. We had front row seats and then were first in line for the book signing. Pretty darn great!!!!
The reading was a total delight. Sedaris' dry delivery is as entertaining in person as it is on the radio. His mimicry of his red neck North Carolinian brother was hilarious. Although Peter and I really can't believe that his brother is that much of a goober.
The question and answer period was quite entertaining. Evidently in one of Sedaris' earlier books, he stated that he never wanted to go to Alaska. So, he was asked about that. He was struck speechless - it was very funny. When he was signing my book, he was still aghast - he could not believe that he'd written that. I suggested that perhaps he had meant Alabama instead of Alaska.
I'm very pleased with my two signed books - both of which are gifts. One is going to my speech therapist (who does not read this blog so the book will still be a surprise). Sedaris has a hilarious story in Me Talk Pretty One Day in which he is slayed by the letter "s" and was sent off to a speech therapist. Evidently to this day, he pretty much becomes tongue tied when in the presence of speech therapists - something that I can relate to.
Anyhoo, when I asked him to inscribe the book for my speech therapist, he replied, "Why are you seeing a speech pathologist? Your voice is wonderful!" Aw shucks...I replied that I owed my wonderful voice to my speech therapist.
