My buddy Mark is a former Alaskan who beat feet to the warmer climes of North Carolina. North Carolina is a nifty place - but in my mind, it has a huge drawback - SNAKES!
Mark's Aussie, Mia is quite the inquisitive pooch. If she lived up here, Mia would have certainly met her fair share of moose and porcupines. But since Mia is a Tar Heel, her critter interactions are more reptialian in nature.
This weekend, Mia's curiosity was piqued by a snake - and not just any snake, but a venomous copperhead! The snake was not pleased to make Mia's acquaintence and expressed his displeasure by biting Mia on the nose.
Fortunately for Mia, Copperhead bites, although extremely painful are not lethal. But poor Mia has an extremely swollen muzzle and jowls. She's on benadryl, painkillers, and antibiotics. You'd think this would be enough to dissuade Mia from future snake encounters. But Mark is not real optimistic. I have a feeling that dogs and snakes are a lot like dogs and porcupines. A few dogs learn their lesson and stay away from porcupines but most get quilled time and time again.
Here's picture of poor dazed snakebit Mia. The arrows point to the puncture marks on her nose. The top blue line is Mia's usual jowl line. The bottom blue line is her current snakebit jowl line.
