Yesterday, the Ski Boy and I headed out to Kincaid Park to do a Fall hike on the trails - and well, maybe, a geocache or two.
It was cold and biting - the leaves are off the trees and we're definitely going into winter - soon! But, the vistas were spectacular.
As we started out, we headed up, up, up, the Lieckesh (butchered spelling) Loop and at the top we were greeted by a stunning view of Denali (Mt. McKinley) and a rare non-winter occurence of the optical illusion/phenomena known as a Fata Morgana. Basically, a castles in the sky sort of deal. Very very very striking.
Two of our three caches were high up on the beach dunes - yes, we actually have beach dunes. Although probably not quite what one would imagine - more like very tall, 100 ft. cliffs overlooking a gravel beach. But hey, in Alaska, one takes what one can get when it comes to beaches. The views from dunes were also quite amazing.
O.k. I know you're all very curious as to what a Fata Morgana actually looks like. So, below are my two shots of Denali. After those two pictures is shot of me with a cache and Turnagain Arm in the background.
First shot - more of closeup. The Fata Morgana effect can be seen at the base of Denali - squarish castle looking stuff.

This shot shows a bit of the Fata Morgana off to the right.

Me with Turnagain Arm behind me. Looks a Norwegian Fjord!!!!
