It's true!!!!
Right now, I'm the biggest Alaska DMV fan in the world!
They bailed me out of a very nasty self inflicted situation. This past Saturday, while in Seattle, I made a very large purchase at the Seattle REI. I whipped out my driver's license in order to complete the Alaska Sales Tax Exemption form. When I looked at the expiration date, I almost keeled over. My license had expired four days earlier - on my birthday. I had no clue...Augh...How stupid can one person be?????
Double Augh because I'm traveling. I need to rent a car when I hit Kansas. You can't rent a car on an expired driver's license. The Ski Boy and I discussed the situation. It was certainly grim - the best plan I could think of was to send my license back to Anchorage with Peter to see if he could get renewed and then Fed-Ex'd back to me.
My guess was that I was going to have to make an emergency trip back to Anchorage on Monday to get my license renewed. It would have meant the big bucks on a plane ticket and a ton of traveling in two days. Plus, I might have to retake the test! Triple Augh...
But, I also harboured a fantasy - I couldn't be the first person this had ever happened to. Perhaps the FAQ on the DMV web site had a little entry along the lines of, "If you're traveling and your license expires..." Nah...No way....
So, as soon as we made it back to hotel room, Peter got on-line and zoomed off to the DMV web site. The news was not good. All license renewals must be in person - you have to surrender your license and take the eye test. Sigh...I started contemplating making my plane reservations. But then, Peter read aloud the following:
License Extension Letter:
If an Alaska resident is temporarily out of state and discovers that their license is expired, an extension letter can be mailed or faxed to extend the expiration date. CDL extensions are limited to 30 days. Extension requests must be made in writing and either mailed or faxed.
At first, I didn't believe Peter. I thought he was pulling my leg. But he was on the up and up!!!! Yipeeee!!!!!!!
And it gets better. I faxed my request to DMV on Sunday night. On Monday morning at 9:30 AM PDT, the front desk called to notify me that a fax had just arrived. It was my 30 day extension!!! Wow - what an incredible turn around!
So, I am now a giant Alaska DMV fan. I realize I might be club of one, but that's o.k. They really came through for me!!! They're the best!
