Speculative (and amateur) Theology.

Have extraterrestrials participated in the Fall? Not Adam’s Fall, surely, but some crisis of their own? This was why I was so excited by Pullman’s His Dark Materials but so profoundly disappointed by its conclusion. (For those who don’t mind spoilers: the cosmology seems to be some mix of Gnostic—with a created being taking on God’s role—and Hellenic—only an underworld connects all the multiverse. Besides the fact that I found Lyra an extremely unlikeable weasel throughout, and the changes in character confusing and without antecedent, the work is scathingly anti-Christian if not specifically anti-Catholic. Art is argument. I believed the flaw in Pullman’s argument is that he sets up the Church as a straw man, though I forget why. Not something I would give my goddaughter.)

If God be omnipresent and immanent, then we will always stand in His Presence. Et in Inferno Ego. It is in the shaping of our hearts (by which I mean our inmost hearts) that we learn to either accept, cup, and reflect His radiating grace or else find it unbearable and searing.

Aquinas says that a sin against conscience is greater than that against knowledge. If God has formed one in such a way that the conscience takes one away from the Church, it is important to follow, even if one knows that the Church is the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic symbol of God’s reign on earth. So my apostate grandmother and aunts were led away from the Church for a reason; would I be the Catholic I am if they had not? Who knows?

Something I read last week that I never noticed before: When Jesus talks about marriage, He ties it intimately with death. The sons of Heaven will not die, therefore they will not marry.

I woke up this morning feeling guilty, as if I ought to have gone to work. This four day weekend thing is getting old really fast. I should be out doing charitable works or looking for a job. Finishing up F Hayek or M Helprin. Something!

I should have done my taxes, but I seem to be constitutionally incapable of doing them within a week of 15 April. Oh blast it, it is within a week, at least today it is. Oh worms! Gotta dig up my forms. Rrrrrrrgh.

Educated Filipinos, Disillusioned at Home, Look Abroad for a Better Life. Sad but true. The hidden story is that once they immigrate, they can't practise their profession because their Filipino degrees are not recognized. The professional organizations in their new countries have a vested interest in making it as difficult as possible for new immigrants to practise. This has to change because why have a system that allows people to immigrate because they have certain skills and not allow them to easily use these skills when they arrive? By way of [Roland Tanglao's Weblog]

Yen of course is already here. Cathy is coming here. Armi is working on it. Din likes being here as long as she is not with her mother, which was not the case this time ’round.

What does this mean? Do those who leave really rob the country of its resources? It has been going on since the 1600s, with the Spanish exporting labor to California. Mom and Dad left during the Marcos regime, yet still they dream that one day, when everything is finished here, they will go back again. It’s almost like some sort of millenial dream.
