Spirited Away was a big hit in Japan and now it's coming to the U.S. The trailer is a beautiful example of how computers have been used to do traditional animation. The result is not computer animation, per se, but it is also not traditional. The 3-D effects and other stylistic elements are absolutely dazzling. It will be opening in selected theaters this week. The only unfortunate thing is that it is being presented by Disney. I suppose that shouldn't bother me, afterall, Disney didn't create it. I just hate when the mouse gets its dingy gloves on things.

The Google Toolbar is a nice little utility that is an add-on to Internet Explorer. It provides a convenient place to do web searches without having to first go to a search engine website. It also provides a number of other useful functions, such as site searches, history of searches, backward links, automatic translation of non-English websites into English and more. If you haven't tried the Google Toolbar, then go here and install it immediately.

Here's a fun little diatribe about global warming that I found on Google [here]. I don't think he supports a number of his statements very well (although, I agree with many of them due to reading I have done other places), but his rhetoric is pretty amusing.

On September 30th, MIT will be launching the first of its free online courses as part of its OpenCourseWare (OCW) initiative [here]. This is a very exciting initiative, as it opens up knowledge to people who are not inclined or don't have the resources available to attend a university. The OCW homepage can be found here.
