Bayesian statistical methods are becoming more and more widely used in computer systems. The technique has been applied to handwriting recognition, space exploration and even spam detection. There is a lot of material available on the web [here][here][Google]. There's even a non-technical introduction from the L.A. Times [here]. 1:59:19 PM ![]() |
Last night I saw Spirited Away. It is one of the best animated films I have ever seen. I would recommend seeing it while it is in the theater [Sept 22nd post]. 10:34:38 AM ![]() |
Paul Dudley writes about one of the local Seattle salsa DJ's, "El General" [here]. 10:20:15 AM ![]() |
If you haven't checked out the 7th Annual Mayan World Salsa Competition videos, check them out now [here]. The video is great and so is the dancing. 10:17:28 AM ![]() |
Here's a crazy little puzzle that confounded me [here]. After reading it several times, I finally got the right answer. It's amazing how your mind can ignore obvious details. 10:10:06 AM ![]() |
It has generally been thought that if life in our solar system exists anywhere else but Earth, then Mars is the most likely place. With the discovery of possible signs of life from a meteorite originating on Mars, this planet's potential has been hightened even more. However, new research is suggesting that Venus may be harboring life in its upper atmosphere [here].
This type of evidence is more appealing to me than the metorite from Mars. The Mars rock showed crystals that resemble those created by microbes found on Earth. This does not definitively prove that the crystals found in the metorite where created by the same process, other processes could be responsible. On the other hand, the Venus finding is more convincing because our knowledge of the chemical reactions involved is more robust and leaves less room for doubt. |
