The Bombardier Beetle is a creature that creationists have used to "prove" evolution wrong. However, like all other "proofs" of intelligent design, this one is also heavily flawed [here].

In order to tell whether something looks designed, you must first be able to distinguish designed from undesigned. This immediately begs the question of what is undesigned. If you believe God created everything, then nothing is undesigned, and the claims of appearance of design fail for lack of comparison. Alternately, you can claim that only certain selected parts of the universe were designed by God.

Creationism says that God created all life through “intelligent design”. How is this distinguishable from "spontaneous design" by evolutionary processes? There is a great deal that is unknown about life and the origins of life; however, creationism asks us to accept our state of ignorance, thus perpetuating ignorance. Science presents the theory of evolution as a starting point for trying to eradicate our ignorance and will lead to an eventual understanding of the mechanisms of life.

Another nicely written article about the upcoming case, Eldred vs. Ashcroft, that the Supreme Court will be hearing next month [here].

The original decision made more than 200 years ago to limit the length of copyrights was deliberate and carefully considered. The goal, which was expressed at the time in letters written by Thomas Jefferson and others, was to allow newcomers to build on and improve works produced by others, but only after the original creators of those works were compensated fairly for their efforts. The reason: Human progress builds upon itself.

Current copyright laws protect that profit making ability of large corporations, but have zero positive benefits to individuals in general.
