I wonder if prophecy was a way, before societies had writing, even now,
to help SHAPE a vision of the future, rather than predict it. My own
vision of society will take many many generations to realize. I read
someone like Howard Zinn or Saul Alinsky or John Stoltenberg or bell
hooks or Chomsky and many, many other voices for social justice and, I
think, the ultimate survival of species, ours and everyone else, and I
think that they might be better prophets (except for Alinsky) than
provocateurs, but what is it that separates prophecy from provocation?
The lilt in the language? Or the specific understanding of the audience.
