Who's appeasing whom?

An EdCone.com reader in Sweden turns the appeasement argument offered by US hawks on its head, casting the US as a serial aggressor that the rest of the world will one day defy: "With every unopposed advance that the US makes, the more the rest of the world becomes appeasers...the more the world appeases the more pissed its citizens become. At some point in time patience snaps...eventually appeasement of the "Preemptive" foreign policy that is currently running the White house will soon draw us into a war that I want no part of."

Robert Shapiro on the soft recovery: "(B)oth the [market] enthusiasts and the New Keynesians face serious empirical problems."

The big news

Last night during primetime three of the four local network affiliates went live to a press conference. War news? Not quite. Roy Williams was talking about his decision to become the head basketball coach at the University of North Carolina.

I was a disgruntled fan. Now I'm regruntled. Good things are going to happen for the Tar Heels.

Thad: "Suddenly, the North Carolina basketball program is on firmer footing for the future than any time since Jerry Stackhouse and Rasheed Wallace bolted Chapel Hill after their sophomore seasons 8 years ago."

With Skip Prosser staying at Wake, it's been a good spring for coaches in the ACC.

Road trip

The Mad Genius was flying through Charlotte yesterday so I drove down to meet him for lunch. We hung out for a couple of hours at some sports bar near the airport. It was fun and productive. It was also fun to drive on a nice spring day. Bonus: I got through to Brad Krantz's radio show and talked to him on the air about the wider war. Greensboro lost out when Krantz moved his show to Charlotte.
