Tolerance is the last refuge of a scoundrel

Josh Marshall: "(Santorum is) not saying, how can you make value-neutral distinctions between homosexuality and bigamy or incest. He is, as nearly as I can tell, making the positive assertion there are no distinctions. They are each "antithetical to strong, healthy families."

On the other hand....

Richard Bennett: "I know (Santorum's) views on homosexuality are at the same time in sync with mainstream America and out of sync with current standards of political correctness." Or at least in sync with Richard Bennett.

Bennett and the Wall Street Journal editorial page are whining that tolerance only cuts one way--that to criticize Santorum's intolerant views is itself intolerant. What, are we supposed to not notice or comment on the words of a powerful Senator? Tolerance, the last refuge of a scoundrel.

Confusing a Jingle for Rock and Roll

One of the things that confused me during the last war was the tinny sound of warblogging. I was ambivalent about going to war when and how we did, but I recognized it as part of a coherent strategy against terrorism. Yet much of the warblogging out there felt tendentious and even dishonest to me. I think it was because the focus was not on the real story, as delineated in this article (and many others), but in reiterating the cover stories --liberation, WMD, etc.--put forward by our government. The Keyboard Colonels sounded tinny because they were mouthing the words of the marketing campaign, not writing about the real campaign. They were singing the jingle and thinking it was rock and roll.
