Josh Marshall: "It's almost awe-inspiring to see the level of energy and coordination the Bush White House can bring to bear in a genuine crisis. Not hurricane Katrina, of course, but the political crisis they now find rising around them."

Eric Muller, who once worked closely with Michael Chertoff, hazards a guess as to how Chertoff's Homeland Security apparatus could have failed so miserably.

Info page on Katrina refugees to be housed in Greensboro. N&R coverage.

From an organizing email:

The effort to bring around 300 stranded and homeless folks from the Gulf Coast to Greensboro is getting well organized on the Greensboro end.  The main coordinating group is the Red Cross, along with the City of Greensboro, United Way, Greensboro Housing Coalition and many faith groups especially the Pulpit Forum.  The local outpouring of volunteers and support is now at the point of overwhelming the local Red Cross.

Once our ravaged brothers and sisters from the Gulf Coast arrive, that could be one or two more days, they will be given medical attention then they will be provided for at the Coliseum by the Red Cross for the next week or two.  The hope is to get many of these people settled into somewhat of a normal life in Guilford County with their own housing ASAP.

Many specific needs will not be known until these people arrive and have a few days to process their horror.  Rooms in homes may be a possibility for some of these folks but the emphasis is on more permanent long term housing to be paid for by FEMA. Clothing and some furnishings should also be paid for by FEMA.

For more specifics once they arrive check out the new web site or call the Red Cross at 333-2111 after Tuesday for volunteer work.  Information about apartments or houses can be forwarded to the Housing Coalition at 691-9521.  Yvonne Johnson and the City Council is setting up a system for contributing funds to these folks that should be available on Tuesday.  Many of these folks will need long term help from sponsors who help them understand the ropes in Greensboro.
