Partial Cure for Internet Addiction!
Does your work suffer because of excessive browsing? Do you find yourself at Slashdot without ever deciding to go there? Do you ever decide "I won't surf today" and then squirm like a pig tied to a stake near the Nevada Test Site? Do you ever say to yourself, "maybe I surf the web all day and all night but at least I don't gamble or drink" (cause you could never pull yourself away from the computer to go to a casino)? I just implemented a partial solution/ cure for surfing. In IE, I went to Tools-> Internet Options -> Content tab ->content advisor -> Settings -> Approved Sites tab and typed in a list of prohibited sites. I put in Fark, Fimoculous, Slashdot, New york times, Yahoo, The Onion, Fuckedcompany.com, Kuro5hin, amazon, wired, slate, salon, internet movie database, cnet, andrewsullivan.com and scripting news . (try going to any of those sites and not spending a half hour or more.) Then, when I just can't push my brain up a hill anymore and I try to fark around for a half hour and see if the work does itself, a window pops up and says "This site is prohibited"! And I say, "Oh yeah, I was going to stop doing that at work." Then I do something useful like empty the crumbs out of my keyboard. Of course you can change it, but that takes going through a number of steps and remembering a password. Those extra steps between you and the devil can save you tons of time and relationships.
