I tried out Spybot Search and Destroy on my work computer after reading about it on the HTML Goodies to Go newsletter. It is free and very easy to install. It found a whole bunch of crazy stuff including Gator, which sells your information to a host of advertisers. I would like to see a comparison of Spybot Search and Destroy against Pest Patrol, which I paid for and which has a bewildering array of choices that I might have to study more to really learn it...
Spybot S & D did give me the message that there were some incompatibilities with Pest Patrol, meaning that Pest Patrol would give some warnings about spyware that was really part of Spybot S & D.
Spybot identified some problems that Pest Patrol did not identify when I ran it recently.
Example: Spybot S & D found a fastclick cookie that Pest Patrol did not find even though Pest Patrol boasted to get rid of fastclick cookies. Spybot also found Internet Explorer holes that were good to know about. It may be that I do not know how to use Pest Patrol correctly to find these spy cookies. I also may need to update Pest Patrol.
Pest Patrol takes 15 minutes to go through my entire hard drive while Spybot does a scan for specific files related to spyware that takes about 90 seconds
