Always nice to see the governor of this great state override the recommendation of the parole board and allow the execution of a mentally ill prisoner go forward. I wonder what part of the public's safety was protected with the execution versus life in prison without the possibility of parole. The cynic in me says it's the public safefty we get when Perry runs for re-election.

I find the death penalty to be a colossal waste of resources and money, not to mention the fact that executing an innocent will negate the penalty, should it ever come out that it's happened (I have my beliefs). Life in prison without the possibility of parole is an effective punishment and happens to be cheaper and filled with far fewer costly and lengthy appeals. I love Texas but the one thing I hate about living here is being the death capital of the country when it comes to executions.

Randy Johnson threw the 17th perfect game in Major League Baseball history today. Baseball isn't that exciting to me but if you think about the number of games played in any given season (currently 162 per team), multiplied by 120 years or so, and then think about something happening only 17 times, you start to understand the magnitude and the excitement surrounding a perfect game. I think it's great it happened to one of the most dominating pitchers of our era. It's too bad he's probably going to end his career on such a pitifully bad team as the Arizona Diamondbacks.

A great post from Alphecca about buying a first gun. In case any of the left-leaning people who read my blog are thinking about it. :-)
