Historical Publications

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), a statutory body affiliated with the National Archives and Records Administration, supports a wide range of activities to preserve, publish, and encourage the use of documentary sources relating to the history of the United States.

Max Evans, former director of Utah State History, was appointed today to head the commission.  He will join the National Archives on January 27th.  The Utah Division of History has been an active participant in online initiatives, including an online search engine for Utah cemeteries, an online collection of historical photos, and a web-based collections catalog.  The Division also developed the educational History for Kids website.

Austria's New eGov Portal
The Institute for eGovernment, a German site, points out Austria's new web portal which was built on the web-environment Zope and the Zope-powered Content Management Framework CMF.  It looks like a nice site with an array of services including digital signatures and live broadcasts of parliament sessions.

Official Payments?
A site called www.officialpayments.com states that it is collecting taxes for over 1,200 local governments in addition to many state and federal agencies.  There are many services like this that want to take government payments for a fee.  I have some concerns about them when you (as a citizen) are trying to verify their legitimacy and that your payment actually makes it where it is supposed to go.  One Utah county that is using their services is Washington County.  Washington County also has added a service to search for tax payment status.
