News Feeds for Government

Bill Gratsch asks the question, "Why doesn't  every elected federal official offer a free feed (of at least their press releases) to local organizational websites back home?"  They should and they will - beginning in Utah.  I think it's just a matter of time.  Watch closely.

I think the idea of doing this on regulations.gov is a great one.  I will discuss the concept with our Division of Administrative Rules to see what value might be added to the outstanding things they are already doing.

Tax Filing

eFile
eFile is a wonderful thing.  I eFiled my Federal and State returns last night.  Because I had filed my Federal return electronically last year, my forms were automatically populated with all the basic information.   After taking a few minutes to add this year's info, I quickly eFiled both State & Federal through a single, secure internet connection and was done.  At 6:25 this morning, I received notice that the Federal return was accepted by the Internal Revenue Service and was given a control number.  According to the response, my refund should be transfered to my financial institution on 02/07/03.  I can check the status of the return at any time.

I am using a low-cost product for efile called TaxAct which I ordered online.  It cost me $25 for the Federal and state software, including the eFile charge.  I think most people can use the free file option.  This is the first time, that I have filed in January and it was easier than ever!
