The National Virtual Translation Center is a good example of cross-agency cooperation facilitated by technology.  The Center was created in 2003 as a clearinghouse to facilitate interagency use of translators.

The 6th Conference of the Association for Machine Translation in the Americas will be held in late September.

The National Association of State Election Directors meets in Oregon on August 6th.  Only one session is scheduled on HAVA.  Several weeks ago, the House Science Committee discussed these issues:

  • How are the accreditation of testing laboratories and the testing and certification of voting equipment conducted?
  • How should voting equipment standards and laboratory testing be changed to improve the quality of voting equipment and ensure greater trust and confidence in voting systems?
  • What can be done to improve these processes before the 2004 election, and what needs to be done to finish these improvements by 2006?

They heard testimony from several interesting presenters, 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 , on this critical issue for the states.
