NARA seeks answer for e-records
Federal Computer Week reports that the National Archives and Records Administration has issued an RFI seeking to address the burgeoning issues associated with electronic records. The problem is that so many of the issues associated with electronic records are not technological, but political and legal. However, the formating issue still remains a formidable challenge. If NARA can settle on an acceptable format, it should go a long way towards settling on a standardized e-records management format which is really needed.
The Utah Department of Administrative Services recently assigned Ken Hansen, the director of Administrative Rules to oversee electronic records issues for the State. Ken has a background in archives in addition to his excellent work in developing a premier website and electronic filing system for administrative rules. The State will want to make sure that as it develops solutions they are coordinated with other industry standards including NARA.
