I went to two locations to shoot panoramas on the spring equinox (March
20th, 2004). The first was the summit at St. Joseph's Hill Open Space
Preserve. I have not scanned that scene yet. Then I drove along the coast from Santa Cruz north and finally settled on the San
Mateo coastside around the Pigeon Point Light Station as my locale, I shot a
number of panoramas over about 5 hours while waiting for the
sun to come out, but it never did. The ones which did not make the
WWP cut are viewable here.
Every other time I've seen the lighthouse, the light was functioning, so I
was hoping for a opportunity to try to get the lighthouse light in a
shot, but it was not functioning while I was there. Later I found out the
lighthouse has been closed for some time due to two 350 pound pieces of the cornice
falling off the superstructure. The lighthouse was in the news around the time of the WWP--ownership was transferred from the Coast Guard to State Parks.

A WWP announcement from Don:
A month ago Don Bain and Landis Bennett suggested a coordinated VR panorama shoot on the day of the Equinox, March 20.
The World Wide Panorama web site
is a very democratic statement - anyone who wanted to participate and
managed to generate a useable panorama was included. Many of the
leading professional VR photographers also participated, contributing
images of consumate craft and artistry. In all there are 180
photographers represented on the site, from 39 countries.
The World Wide Panorama was sponsored by the Geography Computing
Facility, University of California Berkeley. It is hosted as part of
the Geo-Images Project.

Purpose |
VRlog provides news, developments and analysis of the virtual reality (VR) world from a nature photographer's perspective. Since I am not connected to or funded by any VR vendor, I intend to objectively appraise what's going on, and the direction VR is headed in. -- erik goetze
