Panoramic photographers often have to spend a lot of time testing their
website to make sure their work is viewable under all the possible
configurations site visitors might use. That can be a giant pain when
for instance, multiple versions of Internet Explorer for Windows
typically cannot be run on the same Windows operating system at the
same time. So here's what people have had to do up until now: set up
multiple PCs, one for each version of IE; install multiple versions of
Windows on one machine using a virtual O/S like VirtualPC or VMware; or
set up different partitions of their hard disk to boot up different
Windows O/S's. Sounds like a lot of trouble, and it is.
Well someone noticed
how MS was packaging up a test version of Explorer 6 for the Eolas
patent which could run side by side with an existing Explorer;
suggesting it is possible to set up multiple versions of Explorer on
the same machine without rebooting! Another person created Explorer kits
so you can easily run IE4, 5.0, 5.5, and 6 on the same PC. Disclaimer:
Since I don't know any of these people, I'd install this stuff on a
sandbox PC and test it for viruses, etc. Oh, and it doesn't work on
Windows 95 -- but looks like it should work on any Windows newer than
that, plus Windows NT. Mindboggling to think this was possible all
along, and of all the time spent rebooting in order to test a webpage
in a IE5.5, 5.0, 4.0...

Today is the last day of the VR 2004 conference put on by the IEEE. Sounds like some interesting topics on the program.
