Well I am beginning to believe that Safari v1.2 has a regression or bug.

The example file which demonstrates the issue is here.

This file uses Apple's recommended way of embedding QuickTime content in preparation for the Eolas patent. That is, it invokes a JavaScript function QT_WriteOBJECT provided in the AC_QuickTime.js file.

The example file works 100% reliably in Safari v1.0x, Mozilla, Explorer, Opera, and OmniWeb. At least in the latest versions for all the non-safari browsers.

It sometimes works in Safari v1.2, but sometimes does not. When it fails, it says Page Loading Cancelled.

One can eliminate the Page Loading Cancelled error by removing the link to an external stylesheet and embedding the styles inline. This is demonstrated by the file safaritest15. It is not a solution to the problem though because it's a terrible waste to embed one's styles into every single webpage. I've examined my stylesheet very carefully for bugs and don't see anything wrong with it. The HTML in the safaritest files validates perfectly in BBEdit.

This affects my entire collection of VRs for Safari v1.2 viewers.

I hope someone at Apple can verify that there is a problem. I have used the bug report feature of Safari to report it.

Update: I've modified how VirtualParks embeds QTVRs and I find it works at least 50% of the time in Safari 1.2, if not more. But if you press "Shift Reload" enough times, you get the error again.

The World Wide Panorama - Tomorrow is the Day

A world-wide panorama shoot TOMORROW, 20 March, 2004

Tomorrow is E-Day, the Equinox. Celebrate by joining others in over 34 countries in shooting a VR panorama to contribute to the World Wide Panorama.

Shoot one or more panoramas anytime between midnight and midnight, local time. You will have until the end of the month, March 31, to decide on your best and prepare the QTVR panorama and its accompanying caption. Check the web site for recommendations and limits on panorama dimensions, file sizes and captioning information.

On Thursday, April 1, we will announce the url to which you can upload your contribution. By Monday, April 5, we will have a preliminary version of the site available.

Purpose
VRlog provides news, developments and analysis of the virtual reality (VR) world from a nature photographer's perspective. Since I am not connected to or funded by any VR vendor, I intend to objectively appraise what's going on, and the direction VR is headed in. -- erik goetze
