ExtremeTech had a video codec shootout
on theWindows platform,
and QuickTime's MPEG4 didn't do too well, but QuickTime Sorenson did
OK. This test was done on a PC (where Windows Media no doubt has all
the monopoly advantages of hidden interfaces and optimization for the
platform*), and it's hard to know if the test is a fair and balanced
look at the codecs. Since they did not use the professional tools like
Sorenson Squeeze to generate the QuickTime videos, and didn't compare
the best QuickTime codec Pixlet, the review's just one data point
around using $30 QuickTime Pro to make videos. I think it would be
interesting to run the exact
same tests but on a Mac G5, and on a Linux box, and include Pixlet in
the set of codecs. Oh, I forgot, Windows
Media doesn't run on Linux.

* For instance, the Windows version of Microsoft Explorer is clearly
more highly performance optimized than the Macintosh or UNIX versions
of Microsoft Explorer. Why would MS have another platform looking
better than Windows with their own software? They wouldn't.
