I had heard a rumor that some news channel had a video of Bill Gates demonstrating a stitcher making a panorama from a disparate set of digital photographs.

Matt Brown pointed me to the CNN video, and reports that he worked on this project at Microsoft Research as an intern. Matt says that though the project was inspired by his previous work in this area (AutoStitch), the underlying technology is totally separate and quite different.

No info on whether the Microsoft research software shown in the video is headed for a product, but I would speculate that Microsoft will deploy this as part of a iPhoto-type application, perhaps as part of an initiative to provide tools to manage and archive your whole digital life in an electronic shoebox.

Purpose
VRlog provides news, developments and analysis of the virtual reality (VR) world from a nature photographer's perspective. Since I am not connected to or funded by any VR vendor, I intend to objectively appraise what's going on, and the direction VR is headed in. -- erik goetze
