Good Morning Austin Texas and the sun will shine today - that's a rumor, but good enough for me to plan to be on two wheels for the first time this week. We have to be happy about the rain in July, since that is a pretty rare event.
On the headphones right now: Gillian Welch in her brilliant debut album Revival. How this girl from California has genetic makeup to convey the sound and feel of Appalachia is beyond me. She is an orphan so who knows. Her parents were Hollywood writers for the Carol Burnett Show. I bought this album nearly 10 years ago - more evidence that time passes relentlessly.
I spent the day yesterday at a training event for a local customer. The most interesting aspect of the event was a conversation I had with the CEO at the end of the day. He worked 18 years at IBM and when we started comparing notes we knew many, many of the same people. In fact, people he has known for 30 years included people I had worked with during the ROLM/IBM days. Glenn, Jim Z, Manny C., Robert R, and more. It's a small world lads and laddies. Don't be burning those bridges you know.
Here we are on the first Friday of July 2006. I missed the concert event of the summer a few days ago. We should have gone. On the 3rd, the Black Crowes were here with the Robert Randolph Band and DBT (Drive By Truckers) opening for them. DBT is one of my favorite bands, but they do make it to Austin a couple times a year so it won't be long. A group of people waiting to cross 620 were struck by a drunk driver driven car after the show - two of them are in the hospital with serious brain injuries. People drive like retards around here. I take back roads mostly to work and that is the main reason - secondarily, the back roads are twisty and a lot more fun.
So heres a summary: too many people, life moves too fast. Like to slow it down with a little Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Can't stop but can slow down. Next week is Florida and a chance to hook up with some old friends and hear some music. I will be posting along the way. My goal is to light up these pages every few days with whatever is on our minds.
Sydney is right here next to me. She and I get up every day around 5 AM. We are going to go out for a little walk right now. You should too. RiverDogs out for now. Keep smiling.
