Something in the air...

Ceramic perfume bottles, have been with us a long (7BC), long (200BC) time.

From the good folks at the Classics Division at the Univeristy of Kentuky we have some common Greek ceramic perfume containers:

Alabastrons have a flat top. long body and a small base. The can have a string attached to them.

Aryballos with their more rounded shape were used by athletes during training.

Lekythos with its long shape and handle and distinct foot.

Other cultures and eras had ceramic containers for the same function.
A Vietnamese perfume container from the 1500's.

A Mickey Mouse container from the 1930's

A made for export Japanese, Dutch Boy, bottle

A more modern, western, perfume bottle.

All of these were meant to store something special...perfume. However, they may also be used to allow some of the perfume to escape...creating a scent surrounding the object and giving it additional meaning.
