I was watching a special on the Irish potato famine the other night, so it was kind of cool when I ran across this pointer to a post on Sean Gallagher's Rant Central titled "Of Patches and Potatoes: Windows, Monocultures, and Bad Things Happening". A while back I commented on Bruce Schneier's switching to MacOS and how it made me think of the danger a technology monoculture represented. (Coincidentally enough, Bruce Schneier is one of the authors of a detailed report that addresses this issue.) Sean elaborates on that issue significantly--as does Phil Windley in his posts on the topic. Sean looks at the analogy from another angle in his later post titled "Microsoft Monoculture Meets Monsanto".
