Just Chalk It Up

Today, under a brilliant blue sky and sunshine galore, I hastened myself to the annual Chalk Street Painting And Art Exhibition. It is a marvelous combination of superb artists which use a variety of mediums but the emphasis is definately one of chalk. Most artists are "sponsored" by some local company or organization and their area is mapped out for them, right on the street surface. With lines snapped and colors at the ready, they begin the amazing task of rendering a lackluster, black parking facade into nothing short of a work of art.A_Taste_For_Chalk  Some bring copies of famous artworks to use as models, others create from photographs. Still others, create simply from what visions they see in their own minds. Multicolored balloon adorn the entrance while the air is filled with the scent of popcorn and cotton candy. Children with painted face rush by, briefly pausing at some of the more colorful works and the  sounds of 30's and 40's big band tunes played by a live band, loft upon the breeze. There are other artisants nearby who have brought their own paintings, photos, sculptures and various glassworks. I note that every camera and camcorder in sight is being put to good use capturing these "jewels of the pavement" while everyone gingerly steps around each and every border so as not to smudge the beauty. Although I make it a point to attend each year, I am always in awe of the spectacle I find. And after the hours of work and love these artists put into their effort, it is with great saddness to learn that these works of wonder will last but two days more. At that time, a streetwasher will once again return the blacktop to its inky and routine task. Perhaps these transitory visions are sketched before us only to remind one that beauty is most definately, in the eye of the beholder.

Today's Quote:

Drawing is the honesty of the art. There is no possibility of cheating. It is either good or bad.-Salvador Dali
