Independent: "Climate change has been made the world's biggest priority, with the publication of a stark report showing that the planet faces catastrophe unless urgent measures are taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions."

Independent: "Average global temperatures have increased by less than 1C since the Industrial Revolution, but they are projected to increase by up to 5C over the coming century if carbon dioxide levels continue to rise without restraint. With each 1C rise in average global temperatures, the Stern Review portrays progressively more serious scenarios."

Independent: "The [Stern] report predicts that 'climate change will reduce crop yields by 10 per cent over the whole of Africa', a catastrophic development in a hungry continent which, even now, is struggling to increase its harvests enough to feed its rapidly growing population. But even this figure, as an average, disguises much greater, more local disasters."

The Stern review.

George Monbiot: "With the publication of the Stern report, the consensus on climate change is clear. Here's what we need to do."

From the scariest presidential candidate to the scariest billionaire to the scariest cop, these truly are the worst America has to offer.

Canada: "After more than eight months in the kind of high-stress zone that tries tough souls, Canadian Brig.-Gen. David Fraser is about to hand over command in southern Afghanistan.
It's a rotational change of guard Wednesday that will see Dutch Maj.-Gen. Ton Van Loon take over as NATO leader in the South."

The Dutch Parliament only agreed to the Afghanistan 'mission' on the condition that the troops would not engage in real battle and focus on rebuilding the country. We have been fooled again. The Dutch are now responsible for acts of war.

Reuters: "Fighting between NATO forces and a resurgent Taliban this year has been the bloodiest since U.S.-led forces removed the strict Islamist movement from power after the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington.
Afghan authorities are investigating allegations that about 60 civilians were killed last week as a result of NATO operations in Kandahar province, where the Taliban was born. Local leaders and villagers said dozens more were wounded and 25 houses were razed during several hours of NATO bombing."

Observer: "Tony Blair's most trusted military commander yesterday branded as 'cuckoo' the way Britain's overstretched army was sent into Afghanistan.
The remarkable rebuke by General the Lord Guthrie came in an Observer interview, his first since quitting as Chief of the Defence Staff five years ago, in which he made an impassioned plea for more troops, new equipment and more funds for a 'very, very' over-committed army."
