CenterForConstitutionalRights: "On September 26, 2006, attorneys for the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) determined that what appears to be the final version of the Military Commissions Act of 2006 could allow the government to detain the attorneys themselves as 'enemy combatants'. CCR Legal Director Bill Goodman said: 'This ominously broad definition of enemy combatants would mean that almost anyone who actively opposes the President or the government could be locked up indefinitely. This bill makes a mockery of the rule of law.'"

PalestineChronicle: "Citizens of the United States of America bear an awesome responsibility to maintain control of their government's behavior since that government derives its powers from the consent granted it by the citizens. When the government ceases to act in accord with the dictates of the respective consciences of its citizens as determined by its foundational documents - the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights -, when it violates the established principles that give this nation legitimacy before the nations of the world through mutually accepted agreements, charters, and conventions, when it abrogates the inalienable rights granted the citizens by the Creator, when it declares unequivocally that the citizens cannot dissent with an action or actions taken by the government, then it is the right and the duty of the citizen to 'alter or abolish' that government."

AlterNet: "The Military Commissions Act comprehensively assaults two ideas: The idea of checking executive power by laws. And the idea of a separate branch of government ensuring those limits are respected. These are the basic tools of accountability. The MCA frontally attacks both of these - although only time will tell whether it succeeds.
You - citizen or non-citizen, resident of Topeka or Timbuktu - can become an 'unlawful enemy combatant'."

I wonder whether NATO is going to adapt to the 'new rules' and dabble a bit in torture too in Afghanistan.

Now that the lark is on the wing, the snail on the thorn, God in his heaven (He/She'd better stay there) and all is right with the world - after all, we are having an Indian summer in this season of mists and mellow fruitfulness - and tout est pour le mieux dans le meilleur des mondes possibles, some people in this blissful world are putting down a few commas and some are going to church to prepare for their afternoon bout of freestyle torture.
Some people seem to live for pleasure alone. America absolutely stands alone!
Saddam Hussein lives in the White House now. There's a Monster in the White House.
