For the first time ever the Tour de France will have a prologue in London on July 7th and a first stage from London to Canterbury on the 8th.
You can inspect the route with Google Earth.

We hope the Americans and others won't resort to doping this time.

WashingtonPost: "Just a week after Afghan President Hamid Karzai chastised international forces for being 'careless', Afghan officials reported Saturday that possibly 100 or more civilians had been killed in a NATO and U.S.-led assault."

Sweet (Christian) dreams, prime-minister Balkenende!

"I pledge:
1.To demand that my country join an international treaty within the next 2 years that cuts global warming pollution by 90% in developed countries and by more than half worldwide in time for the next generation to inherit a healthy earth;
2.To take personal action to help solve the climate crisis by reducing my own CO2 pollution as much as I can and offsetting the rest to become 'carbon neutral';
3.To fight for a moratorium on the construction of any new generating facility that burns coal without the capacity to safely trap and store the CO2;
4.To work for a dramatic increase in the energy efficiency of my home, workplace, school, place of worship, and means of transportation;
5.To fight for laws and policies that expand the use of renewable energy sources and reduce dependence on oil and coal;
6.To plant new trees and to join with others in preserving and protecting forests; and,
7.To buy from businesses and support leaders who share my commitment to solving the climate crisis and building a sustainable, just, and prosperous world for the 21st century."

CommonDreams: "More than a thousand anti-war protesters rallied near President George W. Bush's family compound on Sunday as he prepared to host Russian President Vladimir Putin for a fence-mending summit.
Taking advantage of blanket media coverage of the summit, some 1,500 demonstrators marched along Ocean Avenue toward the Bush estate, banging drums and carrying peace signs. They chanted 'Impeach W, Impeach Cheney too'."

CommonDreams: "Communism may be oppressive, but it seems as though capitalism is bad for men's health, according to a recent study which found significant increases in mortality rates after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The life expectancy for men freed from the Iron Curtain dropped by six years between 1991 and 1994 amid social disruption, physical hardships and economic instability."

Observer: "Polish gay rights groups claim thousands of homosexuals have fled the country to escape increasing persecution.
Robert Biedron, 27, the head of the Polish Foundation Against Homophobia, said that 'huge numbers' of Polish gays had left the country following the rise to power of the right-wing government. He said: 'It is incredible. The Polish gay community has just left because of the climate of fear and persecution.'
He added: 'Around two million Poles have left the country seeking work and thousands of gays are among them. Many gays are approaching our foundation for help in emigrating to the UK.'"

The land of Tweedledum and Tweedledee again.
Alice in Wonderland:
"Do you think it's going to rain?
Tweedledum spread a large umbrella over himself and his brother, and looked up into it. 'No, I don't think it is,' he said: 'at least - not under here. Nohow.'
'But it may rain outside?'
'It may - if it chooses,' said Tweedledee: 'we've no objection. Contrariwise.'"

There was a time when Amsterdam was one of the most tolerant cities in the world. It no longer is.
Expatica: "A group of six men assaulted two gay men on the Reguliersdwarsstraat in Amsterdam city centre last Thursday night.
Witnesses had called police and the six were arrested. The suspects are all between the ages of 15 and 19. Four are of Moroccan descent, one is Surinamese and one is Turkish."
This is not an isolated incident. It happens almost every week now.
